Founded in 1992, the Economic Development Council (EDC) is a public-private partnership that focuses on business retention, business recruitment, and improving the physical environment and infrastructure of the Greater Plant City area.  The program includes disseminating demographic information, assisting business expansion, attracting new businesses, and monitoring relevant legislation.

The EDC’s Business Retention and Recruitment Programs include compiling and providing demographic packages and industrial lists, providing problem solving assistance, interacting with various government officials and agencies, and monitoring the corporate business climate.  Additionally, the Business Recruitment Program includes working with the Tampa Bay Partnership in its industry and business location program and coordinating similar efforts with the Committee of 100, the economic arm of the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce.  The program also assists new corporate location through the review process, financial arrangements, government incentives, and workforce preparedness and infrastructure issues.

Together with the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce, the EDC hosts an annual Business Awards Banquet to honor area businesses for their outstanding economic and civic contributions to the community.

This is the central office for the four Senators and twelve House of Representative members who represent county residents in the Florida Legislature. Ten of these legislative districts are “Hillsborough based,” and six districts have greater populations from other counties. The office provides support services to the sixteen district offices and to the constituency through legislative monitoring, including appropriations issues; constituent problem resolution, particularly those related to state agencies and programs; copies of statutes and newly enacted laws; educational workshops, helping people work more effectively with the Legislature; bill drafting assistance; legislative and statutory research; informational booklets such as “Agencies” and “Answers”; and media relations. HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY GOVERNMENT

Hillsborough County has a seven-member Board of County Commissioners. Four are elected from single-member districts, and three are elected countywide. The Board approves the County’s operating and capital budgets and the County’s capital improvement program and may take action on any programs for the improvement of the County and the welfare of its residents.

Under a May 1985 Charter Ordinance, County Commissioners are directed to perform legislative functions of government by developing policy for the management of Hillsborough County. The County Administrator – a professional appointed by the Board – and the administrative staff are responsible for implementing these policies. The interim Hillsborough County Administrator is Michael Merril.

The Board also serves as the Environmental Protection Commission. Individual Board Members serve on various other boards, authorities, and commissions such as the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority, Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council, Tampa Bay Water, Aviation Authority, Expressway Authority, Sports Authority, Port Authority, Arts Council of Hillsborough County, Children’s Board, Metropolitan Planning Organization, and the Council of Governments.

Regular meetings of the Board are open to the public and are held on the first and third Wednesday of each month, beginning at 9:00 a.m., on the second floor of the County Center, 601 East Kennedy Boulevard, in downtown Tampa.
